According to last night’s Inside Out Programme – featured on BBC 1 - More than 90% of South East England schools still contain asbestos, the special investigation by the BBC's Inside Out revealed.

Using the Freedom of Information Act, a team conducted the first survey of asbestos in South East schools. Of Kent's 599 schools, 554 contain asbestos; in East Sussex, 185 of the county's 195 schools carry the substance.

Asbestos is a challenging issue for many Heads, Bursars and Maintenance Managers working in schools and for Local Authorities. The recent HSE 'Asbestos Kills, Hidden Killer Campaign' worked to highlight the danger of exposure to asbestos for general trades people such as electricians, plumbers and carpenters - all of which can be found working on-site at schools within the UK.
