Question: WHAT IS ASBESTOS?
Answer: Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral when refined can be used as a binding agent or insulator. The most common forms of asbestos are Chrysotile (White), Amosite (Brown) and Crocidolite (Blue).

Question: MUST IT BE REMOVED?
Answer: It is all to easy to recommend that asbestos must be removed once identified, the realities are that if properly managed asbestos containing materials can remain in-situ. However if there is known to be an area that is liable to damage, or in a dilapidated state then removal should be planned with immediate effect.

Question: WHO SHOULD REMOVE IT?
Answer: A licensed asbestos removal contractor should remove asbestos containing materials, in all instances. Licenses are issued by the Health and Safety Executive and in the majority of cases are for 3 years.

Question: WHERE DOES THE WASTE GO?
Answer: All asbestos waste is double bagged, first in a red bag, highlighting that it is a hazardous material, and then in a clear bag. It is transported via a sealed vehicle to a landfill site licensed by the Environment Agency for the disposal of hazardous waste, including asbestos.

Question: I NEED AN ASBESTOS REGISTER - WHAT IS IT?
Answer: An Asbestos Register is a document that identifies the location of asbestos containing materials. Its content must be current, and therefore must be updated as works are completed irrespective of whether those works are for Management or Removal. NOTE: The importance of the Asbestos Register must not be understated and it should be regarded as a consultation document prior to the planning/commencement of works.

Question: WHY IS ASBESTOS DANGEROUS?
Answer: The microscopic fibres that make up asbestos, and indeed which give it such excellent 'binding qualities' can become airborne if the materials becomes damaged. Once airborne these fibres can be inhaled into the respiratory system, and could cause serious health problems.
